Minister Of Home Affairs Tito Calls The Government Of Godok Handling Bantargebang TPA Waste

JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said the government would consider a focus approach to managing upstream, downstream, or a combination of both, the Bantargebang Final Disposal Site (TPA) which has stockpiled 55 tons of waste by the end of 2024.

This was conveyed by Tito ahead of a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, June 10. The meeting discussed environmental issues, including national waste management.

Some practices are based upstream, some are downstream based, and some are combining the two. This is what we are evaluating," he said, quoted by Antara.

He also said that a complete report on waste management would be submitted by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in a meeting with the President.

"If I'm not mistaken, a report will be from the Ministry of Environment. We will discuss everything there," he said.

According to Tito, waste management from upstream is very important and has been implemented in a number of areas such as Bali, Klungkung, Gianyar, Banyuwangi, and Sumedang.

In these areas, said Tito, the community is directly involved in collecting and processing waste through the formation of a group of managers.

Inorganic waste is sold to third parties for recycling, while organic waste is used for solvent fly cultivation that producesbags as animal feed.

In this way, said Tito, the volume of waste entering the final disposal site (TPA) can be significantly reduced.

"Several regions have implemented upstream models by involving the community. Garbage is collected, processed, and even organic ones can be used for solvent flies, so that in TPA there is little gap," said Tito.

On the other hand, he also highlighted the downstream approach commonly used in big cities such as Jakarta. In this system, waste is collected without initial processing, then taken to the Bantar Gebang TPA for further processing.

Tito said that one of the processing methods used is burning waste into briquettes that have economic value.
