JAKARTA - Mount Kuda in Cipanas Village, Dupaningtang District, Cirebon Regency, is indeed an area prone to ground movement. This area has long been known as an area that has high potential for landslides, mainly due to its geological characteristics and steep topography and high rainfall intensity.

The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) confirmed that the site of the C excavation mine in the area is included in the vulnerability zone of high ground movement, with opportunities for events of more than 50 percent based on historical data on land movement.

"The Mount Kuda mining area is located in areas that statistically often experience land movement events, both in the form of old landslides and new events," explained the Head of the Geological Agency, M. Wafid, as quoted by ANTARA.

He explained that the activity of ground movement at the location was still active, driven by extreme rainfall and the possible influence of seismic activity in the vicinity.

"The land movement that has occurred before can be reactivated, especially when triggered by heavy rain or vibrations due to the earthquake," he said.

Wafid also highlighted the condition of slopes in the mining area which is classified as risky, with a sharp tilt angle and the presence of artificial slopes from unstable pile material.

The Geological Agency appealed to mining activities in the area to be carried out with extreme caution, and to follow the technical recommendations of geological disaster mitigation in order to prevent greater losses, both from an environmental and human safety perspective.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the landslide incident that occurred at the Gunung Kuda mine had claimed 10 lives. Two of them are still in the process of further identification.

"The total number of victims who died reached 10 people, and six others were injured," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari.

The injured have received medical treatment at the nearest health facility such as Sumber Hurip Hospital and a number of health centers around the location.

The results of a rapid study by BNPB noted that landslides also buried a number of heavy equipment, including three excavators and six material transport trucks.

"Although the weather is currently bright, the SAR team is still on standby at the location to anticipate potential aftershocks," added Abdul.
