MALANG - Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Malang, East Java, ranks 313th as the best campus in Asia based on the SCImago Institutes Rankings (SIR) in 2025.
Head of UPT UB Hendrix Reputation Yulis Setyawan Ph.D said the UB rating had increased significantly. In 2024, UB was ranked 541 and in 2025 it rose to 313 in Asia.
"This ranking of 313 in Asia makes UB the 6th best university in Indonesia," Hendrix said in a statement in Malang, Saturday.
SIR has its own methodology compared to other rating institutions, which focuses more on research and scientific publications of an institution. SIR measures through three factors, namely the performance of research, innovation, and social impact through the visibility of the site of each institution.
Research indicators are used to measure the number of research documents that have been published by the university and indexed in Scopus. This assessment includes three main aspects. First, the normalized impact, which is the measure of the impact of the satiation on an individual level that reflects institutional leadership in producing quality scientific works.

Second, excellence with leadership, which is an indicator that assesses the number of documents in the leading category (excellence) where institutions act as the main contributors. Third, high quality publicities which refer to the number of institutional publications published in the world's most influential scientific journals.
Innovation indicators are used to assess the contribution of institutions to innovative knowledge and technology. These indicators consist of three main components, namely innovative knowledge, patents, and technological impact.
Innovative knowledge is the number of scientific publications issued from an institution that is confiscated in patent documents. Patents measure the number of patent applications associated with institutions, while technological impact shows the percentage of institutional scientific publications confiscated in patents, as an indicator of the impact of technology on the institution's research results.
The last indicator is the social impact, which is an indicator that assesses the extent to which institutions contribute to the wider community through two main components: web size and sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Web size measures the number of pages associated with institutional URLs according to data from Google, as an indicator of the visibility and affordability of institutional information in cyberspace.
While sustainable development goals calculate documents related to sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations, reflect the role of institutions in supporting the global agenda for inclusive and sustainable development.
Hendrix said universities will continue to be committed to improving or maintaining this achievement by advancing the quality and quantity of publications through various programs such as UB Stars, Visiting Lecturers, Berkarya Lecturers, lecturer research grants, and so on.
"When viewed by the methodology, 50 percent of the assessment comes from the quality of the publication. That's what we need to improve," said Hendrix.
This year, UB has a scientific journal publication target of 4,000. In comparison, in 2024 UB managed to publish 2,300 scientific journals, and in 2023 there were 1,900.
Hendrix emphasized that UB is committed to continuing to improve quality in various aspects, including in the field of research and social impacts. Thus, it is hoped that UB rankings at the regional and global levels will continue to increase.
