Actions To Turn Off Lights In Jakarta Successfully Save IDR 538 Million And Reduce 297 Ton Carbon Emissions

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Environment Agency (LH) noted that the action of turning off lights in a number of locations and buildings for 60 minutes managed to save electricity costs of IDR 538 million and also reduce carbon emissions to 297.77 tons.

The action of turning off this lamp was carried out in the framework of the 2025 Earth Day Commemoration on Saturday, April 26. The fire was extinguished on the street protocol, arterial roads in five city areas and it was an icon of the city of Jakarta such as the National Monument (Monas).

Then, the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Welcome Statue of the Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout, the Youth Statue, the Sudirman Statue, and a number of state government buildings at the DKI City Hall.

"Last night's blackout wound resulted in significant savings compared to the previously held action," said Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto in Jakarta, Sunday, April 27.

According to Asep, based on data from the PLN Main Distribution Unit of Greater Jakarta (PLN Disjaya), this blackout action managed to save electricity consumption by 372 megawatt hour (MWh).

Asep said that this amount resulted in cost savings of Rp. 537 million based on reduced electricity consumption. He said that apart from having an impact on cost savings, this action was also able to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2e) emissions produced.

From this blackout, Rp538,599,843 was saved based on electricity savings of 372 MWh. In addition, there was a decrease in carbon emissions by 297.77 tons of CO2e," he said.

Because it has a significant impact, Asep hopes that this program will not only be implemented when commemorating Earth Day, but can also be done several times in one year to get used to energy-efficient citizens in their daily lives.

For example, continued Asep, actions to save energy and reduce carbon emissions that can be done by residents, such as using energy efficient electronic devices and turning off electronic devices when not used.

According to Asep, although it looks small, if this behavior is carried out massively, it will have a major impact on the sustainability of the earth.

"If it is done consistently, we can create a cleaner city in Jakarta," he said.
