JAKARTA The Indonesian government is negotiating with the United States (US) regarding the import tariff policy that has been implemented since the administration of President Donald Trump. The two countries are targeting the completion of these negotiations within the next 60 days.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that the negotiations were constructive, and it had been agreed that there would be a follow-up through a technical team from the US Trade Representative Office (USTR) and the US Department of Commerce.
"In the meeting, Indonesia and the United States agreed to take further steps through the technical team from the USTR and the Secretary of Commerce. And interestingly, the two countries also agreed to complete the negotiations within 60 days. The frame of reference has been agreed," said Airlangga in a virtual press conference, Friday, April 18.
Airlangga explained that in the negotiation process, the two countries expressed their hopes about adjusting tariffs and non-tariff policies. The US, he said, asked for a more balanced trade tariff structure.
"America has expressed their hopes, one of which is so that the tariff structure can be more balanced," he said.
On the other hand, Indonesia also expressed hope that 20 superior export products from the country to the US could get a more competitive tariff, not even higher than the tariffs imposed on competing countries.
"If America has been given a balanced rate, then Indonesia also hopes for the same thing. We hope that 20 Indonesia's superior export products to the US can be subject to a balanced tariff, not higher than competing countries," said Airlangga.
