President Prabowo Has Signed The New TNI Law

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto has signed Law Number 3 of 2025 concerning Amendments to Law Number 34 of 2004 concerning the Indonesian National Army (UU TNI).

Minister of State Secretary (Mensesneg) Prasetyo Hadi confirmed this.

Based on a copy file of the TNI Law, it is known that the policy will take effect from the date of promulgation, namely on March 26, 2025.

In the file, there is a change in Article 3 paragraph (2) in Law Number 3 of 2025, that the defense policies and strategies as well as strategic planning of the TNI are now under the coordination of the Ministry of Defense. Meanwhile, the deployment of military force remains under the control of the President.

In addition, this law brings a number of significant changes, including the expansion of the main tasks of the TNI, rearranging the positions of soldiers in ministries and civil institutions, as well as adjusting the retirement age of soldiers.

Article 7 states a new provision in the form of military operations other than war that allows the TNI to help overcome cyber threats, maintain strategic vital objects, assist local governments, and protect national interests abroad.

In addition, article 47 also provides a legal basis for active soldiers to occupy positions in agencies such as the Attorney General's Office, the Supreme Court, to the National Counterterrorism Agency. However, this placement still prioritizes coordination between institutions and the principles of transparency and accountability.

No less important, the soldier's retirement age limit is now extended based on Article 53. For high four-star officers, the maximum retirement age has increased to 63 years and can be extended twice, one year each, based on organizational needs.
