BMKG Asks To Beware Of High Waves In NTT Until March 13, 2025

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the public to be aware of the potential for waves with moderate to high categories in a number of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) sea areas on March 10-13, 2025.

"Be aware of the potential for moderate waves with a height of 1.25 meters and high waves with a height of 2.5 meters that is likely to occur in the NTT sea area for the next three days," said Tenau Maritime Meteorological Station Head Yandri Anderudson Tungga in Kupang, Monday, March 10, as reported by Antara.

He said the potential wave height as high as 1.25-2.5 meters is likely to occur in the western Sumba Strait, southern Sumba waters, northern and southern waters of Sabu Raijua, waters, and southern Sape Strait.

In addition, it also has the potential to occur in the southern waters of Flores, the Savu Sea, the southern waters of Alor Pantar, the Ombai Strait, the northern waters of Timor, the northern waters of Kupang-Rote, and the southern waters of Timor-Rote.

He added that in general the wind pattern in the NTT region moved from southeast to southwest with wind speeds ranging from 4-30 knots.

The highest wind speeds were observed in the Alor Strait, Pantar Strait, southern waters of Alor Pantar, Ombai Strait, and Sawu Sea.

He appealed to the public, especially sea transportation users, to increase awareness of shipping safety risks.

For fishing boat users, he said, it should be vigilant if the wind speed reaches 15 knots and the wave height reaches 1.25 meters.

For barge users, be aware that wind speeds reach 16 knots and wave heights reach 1.5 meters.

He said the BMKG had issued shipping safety advice for people valid for the next three days from March 10-13.
