JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the shooting case of five Indonesian citizens by Malaysian authorities had been handled by the local government.
This was conveyed by Yusril when asked about the development of the shooting case in Malaysian waters which resulted in the death of an Indonesian citizen some time ago. He said the perpetrators had been handled in accordance with the provisions of the neighboring country law.
"This is a point that I have repeatedly asked about the shooting of Indonesian citizens in Malaysia, this case has subsided and has also been handled by the Malaysian government," said Yusril after meeting the Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Saifuddin Nasution Ismail at his office, Rasuna Said, South Jakarta, Tuesday, February 25.
Even so, Yusril did not specify the punishment for the perpetrators. "There are legal steps taken against those involved in this error or against the Malaysian security forces as well as examinations are carried out, whether it is in accordance with the SOP in carrying out these security measures," he said.
He hopes that this case will not then damage diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Malaysia. Moreover, Yusril said that the rights of victims and law enforcement to the perpetrators had been carried out by the two countries.
"So there is no more need to doubt. So our request is for many parties to take one, one legal step against both the victim and the perpetrator has been taken by the Malaysian government," said Yusril.
"We respect the legal action that has been taken by the Malaysian government," he continued.
As previously reported, five Indonesian citizens were shot by Malaysian authorities in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor on January 24, 2025. This incident resulted in four people being injured, two of whom were critical after undergoing surgery.
