JAKARTA - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that every negotiations to end the war with Russia must involve Kyiv at the negotiating table, in a phone call on Thursday, the prime minister's office said.

"The leaders stressed that at the end of the peaceful conflict they must involve Ukraine on the negotiating table," according to a phone call statement with President Zelensky released by PM Trudeau's office.

In his phone call with President Zelensky, PM Trudeau reiterated Canada's support for Ukraine and "reaffirmed that there would be no sustainable peace in Europe without security for Ukraine," the statement said.

Meanwhile, President Zelensky in an upload on social media X expressed his appreciation and gratitude for PM Trudeau's support.

"I am grateful for his support for our formidable fighters. This means a lot to us. We will never forget what the Canadian people have done for Ukraine and our common future," President Zelensky tweeted.

"Justin told me about his recent online meeting with European leaders. A united position is key to ensuring lasting peace," he said.

US President Donald Trump is pushing for a quick deal to end the war, which has worried Washington allies in Europe by not bringing them and Ukraine into initial negotiations with Russia last Tuesday.

Canada itself has one of the largest Ukrainian diaspora in the world outside countries bordering Ukraine, with Ottawa having been one of Kyiv's most persistent supporters of the conflict with Moscow.
