Not A Reshuffle, Megawati And Minister Of Education And Culture Nadiem Discuss The Missing Pancasila Curriculum

JAKARTA - Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) Nadiem Makarim held a meeting with the Head of the Steering Committee of the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri.

The meeting, which was held in the middle of the cabinet reshuffle issue, turned out to discuss the loss of the Pancasila curriculum in Government Regulation (PP) 57/2021.

During the meeting, Megawati explained the importance of Pancasila and Indonesian subjects being included in the National Education Standards. This is important, so that young people do not lose their identity as the Indonesian nation.

"Apart from being the basis and ideology of our country, Pancasila also functions as the personality of the Indonesian nation. So in my opinion, the Pancasila subject must be included in the education curriculum at all levels," Megawati said as quoted in a written statement, Wednesday, April 21.

A similar sentiment was also conveyed by Deputy Chairman of the MPR, Ahmad Basarah, who was also present at the meeting. He emphasized that Pancasila is the source of all state laws.

"Pancasila is the source of all sources of state law, so all terminations of laws and regulations must be sourced and must not deviate, let alone contradict Pancasila," he said.

"Apart from that, in Law 12 of 2012 concerning Higher Education, the Pancasila course is also regulated as a compulsory subject. What the government should have done in establishing PP 57 of 2021 also refers to Law 12 of 2012 instead of continuing the legal vacuum in the National Education System Law. Responding to this, Nadiem explained the reason why Pancasila subjects were not included in PP 57/2021. This, he said, occurred because the National Education System Law did not include Pancasila subjects as compulsory subjects.

Even so, Nadiem welcomed the results of the discussion held at Megawati's residence in the Jalan Teuku Umar area, Central Jakarta. "My attitude as the Minister of Education and Culture agrees that the Pancasila subject should be included in the revision of PP 57/2021 under the name of the Pancasila and Citizenship subject," said Nadiem.

He also asked all parties to oversee the revision of this regulation. Because the agency authorized to carry out these improvements is not only the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Regarding this request, Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly who was also present at the meeting admitted that he was ready to support. "We (Kemenkumham, red) are ready to provide maximum support for the harmonization of legislation in revising PP 57/2021," he concluded.
