JAKARTA - The Canadair Regional Jet 700 aircraft, operated by its American Airlines subsidiary, collided with the US Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC, United States.
Canadair Regional Jet 700 (CRJ700) was created in Canada by Bombardier.
This single hallway can accommodate between 68 and 78 passengers. The American Airlines website says its CRJ700 can accommodate 65 people in three classes.
CRJ700 is powered by two jet engines installed on the back of the aircraft.
The CRJ-700 series first flew in 1999, with jet production ending in 2020. The affected aircraft, the N709PS tail number, was created in 2004, according to FAA records.
The US Army's UH-60 Black Hawk was built by Sikorsky Aircraft, part of defense giant Lockheed Martin. The aircraft is powered by a dual turbine engine and can carry up to 12 soldiers in a combat configuration, according to its manufacturer.
More than 5,000 Black Hawks serve in all branches of the US military and 35 other countries around the world, Lockheed Martin said.
Meanwhile, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed on Thursday morning local time, the two planes were in the water.
There were 64 people on the American Airlines plane and three were on military helicopters.
"The focus right now is saving people, and that's the focus of all of our personnel," Bowser said.
He declined to comment on recovery efforts or investigations, which he said would be led by the National Transportation Safety Council.
Earlier, American Airlines told CNN 60 passengers and four crew members were on board the plane that crashed.
