The Attorney General's Office (AGO) revealed that so far 80 witnesses have been examined in the investigation into the alleged corruption case of sugar imports involving the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) for the 2015-2016 period.

This was revealed by the Director of Investigation at the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) at the AGO, Abdul Qohar, when asked about the possible involvement of other Ministry of Trade officials in this case.

"Is there any role from other Ministry of Trade officials? We have examined more than 70 witnesses, nearly 80 witnesses, and we are researching their respective roles, both directly involved and those who only know or hear," Qohar told reporters on Tuesday, January 21.

The examination of these witnesses aims to ascertain whether there is evidence showing the involvement of other Ministry of Trade officials in the alleged corruption case of sugar imports.

Although Qohar did not provide definite information regarding the involvement of Ministry of Trade officials, he emphasized that if sufficient evidence was found, whoever was involved would be made a suspect.

"If sufficient evidence is found, at least two pieces of evidence, investigators will hold the suspect accountable. However, if there is not enough evidence, we will not go there," he said.

Previously, the AGO had named nine people as suspects in this case. They are directors to president directors (directors) of a number of companies.

The suspects are TWN (President Director of PT AP), WN (President Director of PT AF), HS (President Director of PT SUJ), IS (President Director of PT MSI), TSEP (Director of PT MT), HAT (Director of PT DSI), ASB (President Director of PT KTM), HFH (Director of PT BMM), and ES (Director of PT PDSU).

Most of the suspects were named because they had consolidated to determine who would import sugar. They held meetings in the SCBD area four times, although these companies only have permits to produce refined sugar. Only SOEs have the right to import white crystal sugar.

"Their goal is to appoint parties who will import raw crystal sugar and process it into white crystal sugar," Qohar explained.
