JAKARTA - The thick smoke surrounding the Indian capital sparked warnings of possible flight disruptions from airport and airline officials.

Smoke makes air quality worse and reduces visibility to zero in some areas.

Delhi, which has been battling smoke fog and poor air quality since early winter, is ranked third among the world's most polluted capitals according to a live rating issued by Swiss group IQAir on Friday, January 3.

As reported by Reuters, no diversions or cancellations have yet been reported, an airport spokesman said, although authorities warned in a post on X that had no equipment to allow landings in low visibility could face difficulties.

On social media, India's largest airline IndiGo and low-cost airline Spicejet also warned of delays due to weather.

"The average delay is eight minutes for 20 flights at 10.14," said flight site FlightRadar24.

Several rail services in the capital were also delayed, the media said.

The air quality in New Delhi was considered "very bad" on Friday, with an index score of 351, the country's highest pollution control agency said, far beyond levels from zero to 50 deemed "good".
