Opposing Jusuf Kalla, Agung Laksono claims to be elected as PMI chairman through a rival national conference

JAKARTA - Chairman of the Golkar Party Expert Council Agung Laksono claimed that he was elected as the General Chair of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) for the period 2024-2029 through the rival National Conference (Munas) which was held at the Sultan Hotel, Central Jakarta.

The National Conference was held to counter the results of the National Conference which appointed former Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) as the General Chair of PMI.

"Yes, that's right (elected as Chair of PMI, ed), we have a National Conference at the Sultan Hotel," Agung said when contacted, Monday, December 9.

Agung emphasized that the process of the National Conference which was held at the Sultan Hotel was in accordance with the provisions of the internal regulations of PMI. He explained that the reason for organizing the National Conference was based on the disappointment of PMI administrators under the leadership of Jusuf Kalla.

"The national process in accordance with organizational provisions is possible, because the friends are disappointed, the friends feel their aspirations are combined, so they can't talk, can't say that," Agung explained.

"Then with such arrogance of power, then due to the stuffy stuffy, they make their own (munas) rivals, because here there is freedom, previously it was confined," he added.

It is known that Jusuf Kalla was elected as the General Chair of PMI for the 2024-2029 period of the XXII PMI National Conference (Munas) in 2024 officially appointed Jusuf Kalla as the General Chair of PMI for the 2024-2029 period. This decision was ratified on Monday, December 9, 2024 at the Plenary Session 3 in Jakarta.

The Chairperson of the Session, Adang Rochjana, announced the results of this National Conference in front of all participants of the XXII National Conference consisting of PMI administrators at the provincial, district and city levels throughout Indonesia.

"All National Conference participants decided Jusuf Kalla to return to lead PMI in the 2024-2029 period," said Adang Rochjana.

Jusuf Kalla was elected thanks to the support from the XXII National Conference participants who entered more than 50 percent of the number of delegates entitled to attend. According to PMI regulations, if there are candidates for support more than 50 percent, then the candidate can be determined by acclamation as General Chair.

"I would like to thank all the National Conference participants who entrusted me to return to lead PMI in the 2024-2029 period," said Jusuf Kalla.
