Rebels Continue To Advance, Thousands Of People Leave Syria's Homs City

JAKARTA - Thousands of people fled the city of Homs in central Syria from Thursday night to Friday morning. rebel forces are currently trying to launch their rapid attacks on government forces further south.

Rebels have captured key cities, Aleppo and Hama/Hamat. Rebels launched successive attacks on President Bashar al-Assad's administration, nearly 14 years after protests against him erupted across Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, said thousands of people began evacuating on Thursday night to the western coast, which is the government's base.

A resident on the coast said thousands of people had started arriving there from Homs, fearing the insurgent movement.

On Friday, 6 Desemebr, morning, Israeli airstrikes hit two border crossings between Lebanon and Syria, Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamieh said.

Syrian news agency (SANA) said the border between Arida and Lebanon could not be used as a result of the attack.

The Israeli military said it had attacked arms transfer centers and infrastructure overnight on the side of the Lebanese border with Syria, and said the route had been used by Lebanese armed group Hezbollah to smuggle weapons.

The Russian bombing last night also destroyed the Rustan bridge along the main M5 highway, the main route to Homs, to prevent rebels from using it, a Syrian military officer told Reuters.

There were at least eight attacks on the bridge, he said. Government forces brought reinforcements to positions around the city.

Rebels led by Islamist faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham promised to continue to advance south towards Homs, a intersection town linking the capital Damascus in the north and Assad's center of power along the coast.

The insurgent operating room urged Homs residents via online posts to bounce back, saying: "Time has come."
