JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta residents are required to sort waste so that they are free from the levy of cleaning services (RPB). According to the Provincial Government (Pemprov) of DKI Jakarta, this appeal can be started on January 1, 2025.
"Households that sort waste and become active customers of waste banks will be exempt from the retribution of cleaning services. We require people to sort waste, otherwise it will be charged with levies," said Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto as quoted by Antara.
Waste sorting in the first source is a priority to reduce the amount of waste sent to the final disposal site (TPA). This method is a form of support for the revolution in reducing waste through the retribution of cleaning services (RPB).
However, for residential houses that actively sort waste from their sources and or are members of the waste bank, they will get exemption from the retribution.
This release is an incentive to encourage Jakarta residents to be more concerned about waste management. Asep said this retribution exemption policy aims to motivate the public to be more aware of sorting waste.
He then explained that the waste management system in Jakarta is based on management from upstream to downstream. For this reason, various steps have been taken to maximize upstream waste management.

"We have run a RW-based waste management program, supported the circular economy through the waste bank, and built a Jakarta Reccycle Center (JRC) recycling center in Pesanggrahan," he said.
He said the RPB policy was supported by the central government. This is because the Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, said that the mechanism will provide incentives for people who have tried to sort waste from sources and are not subject to retribution fees.
He emphasized that Jakarta can be an example of inspiring waste management for other regions
On the other hand, Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta, Teguh Setyabudi said that Jakarta has long been a pioneer in waste management through various regulations, including Governor Regulation (Pergub) Number 142 of 2019 concerning the use of environmentally friendly shopping bags and Pergub No. 77 of 2020 concerning waste management in the scope of RW.
He argues that through the governor's regulation, Jakarta shows a serious commitment to reducing waste from its source.
According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), the amount of waste accumulation in 2023 will reach 38.4 million tons per year. Of that amount, national managed waste has only reached 61.62 percent, the remaining 38.38 percent have not been managed properly.
Meanwhile, the data compiled by ANTARA states that the amount of waste in Jakarta reaches 7,500 tons per day.
The waste produced in Jakarta comes from various sources, namely: residential areas, contributing 60 percent of total waste and the remaining 29 percent of the business and industrial world.
