JAKARTA - Iran's nuclear program has experienced a decline over the past year to two due to the latest US airstrikes, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said.

"We have lowered their program capabilities for one to two years. At least, intelligence assessments within the department rate that way," Parnell said as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, July 3.

"We expect more than two years, such as slowing down for two years," he continued.

The U.S. assessment of the damage to Iran's three main nuclear facilities remains unchanged, Parnell said.

He said the locations had been completely destroyed.

"We believe Iran's nuclear capabilities have experienced a serious decline, perhaps even their ambition to make bombs," Parnell said.

He also said that further assessments were still ongoing.

The US dropped six bunker-destroying bombs at the Fordow nuclear facility on June 22 and launched dozens of submarine-based cruise missiles to two other locations in Natanz and Isfahan as part of a campaign against Iran's nuclear program.

The sixth round of negotiations between the US and Iran is scheduled for June 15, but Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military, nuclear and civilian sites on June 13.

The 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran ended with a US-sponsored ceasefire taking effect on June 24.

The Defense Department will support a diplomatic mission to continue that peace by ensuring that we maintain capabilities across the Middle East, Parnell said.

President Donald Trump and Defense Minister Pete Hegseth have various military options available to protect US citizens, soldiers, and troops in the region.

"We currently do not have an update regarding the posture of strength in the CENTCOM responsibilities region," he said.

When asked if Washington plans to continue to reduce its troop presence in Syria, Parnell replied the US still has around 1,500 troops in Syria.
