Despite Ban, Kemenhub Predicts There Are 27 Million People Still Homecoming 2021

JAKARTA - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said his party has conducted a survey on the community's plans to conduct homecoming in 2021.

Budi said that although the government has banned Eid al-Fitr 2021 to control COVID-19 cases, there are still tens of millions of people who will still return home.

"If there is a ban on homecoming, then who wants to go home 11 percent with 27 million people. This is a fixed number," Budi said after the plenary cabinet meeting at the ministerial level, aired Youtube Presidential Secretariat, Wednesday, April 7.

Budi identified that the most homecoming destination of jabodetabek residents is to Central Java with 37 percent or approximately 12 million people and to West Java 23 percent or about 6 million people.

If there is no ban on homecoming, public interest will be even higher. According to the Ministry of Transportation survey, there are 33 percent or 81 million people who will do homecoming.

"Therefore, we are tasked by the President to mitigate what happened in the previous year. Mr. Menko PMK has set the homecoming prohibited. The Ministry of Business will consistently follow up in more detail in ministerial regulations," he explained.

Previously, Minister of Foreign Affairs Muhadjir Effendy had issued a letter to the Ministers and Heads of Institutions on March 31, 2021, containing the decision to eliminate Eid al-Fitr homecoming activities in 2021.

The ban applies both to state civil servants, TNI-Polri, state-owned enterprises employees, private employees, self-employed workers, and the entire community.

The homecoming ban will take effect on May 6-17, 2021, and before and after that date, it is encouraged to the public not to make movements or activities outside the area, unless absolutely in urgent and necessary circumstances.
