JAKARTA - Ukraine's large-scale drone strike against Russia triggered an explosion like an earthquake in an arsenal in the Tver region. The Ukrainian attack forced the evacuation of the nearby city.

Unverified videos and images on social media showed large fireballs rising high in the sky and several explosions occurred in the lake about 380 km (240 miles) west of Moscow.

NASA satellites captured a strong heat source originating from an area of about 14 square kilometers (5 square miles) at the site in the early hours of the morning and an earthquake monitoring station captured what sensors said was a small earthquake in the area.

"The enemy attacked an ammunition warehouse in the Toropets area," said Yuri Podolyaka, a pro-Russian military blogger born in Ukraine.

"Everything that caught fire was burned there (and exploded)," he added.

Russian state media in the past reported a large warehouse of conventional weapons located at the site of the explosion.

Igor Rudenya, the governor of the Tver region, said the Ukrainian drone was shot down, the fire broke out, and several residents were being evacuated. He did not mention what caught fire.

A woman told Reuters her family members were evacuated from Toropets.

The fire started with an explosion, said the woman who identified herself as Irina.

The situation in Toropet was stable until noon local time (09.00 GMT) and the evacuated residents were able to return. The fire has been extinguished and no casualties have been recorded.
