Makassar State University (UNM) Head of the Makassar State University (UNM) Nurdin Halid urged police officers to arrest the perpetrators of destroying campus facilities by mass action on Monday (26/8) night on the ground floor of the Pinisi Tower, Jalan Andi Pangeran Pettarani, Makassar, South Sulawesi.

"We cannot tolerate actions that damage educational assets. The police must move quickly and professionally to reveal the mastermind behind the incident," Nurdin said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, August 27.

In addition, Nurdin also encouraged the UNM Student Executive Board (BEM) to take legal steps to follow up on the incident.

"Don't let this destruction just pass. BEM must immediately take legal action so that justice can be upheld," he said.

Nurdin appealed to all UNM students to maintain calm and not be provoked by incidents of attacks by unknown people destroying campus facilities indiscriminately.

"I ask all students to remain calm, guard our campuses, and not to be provoked by parties who want to divide our solidarity," he said again.

The destruction of campus facilities adds to the long list of incidents that threaten security in education.

He hopes that with the firm action of law enforcement officers, similar incidents will not be repeated in the future.

Previously, hundreds of unknown people managed to get on campus and immediately broke the glass and damaged the property on the first floor of the Pinisi Tower. Although some police and campus security officers tried to stop them but they ignored them

The attack on the UNM campus was after the police dispersed the actions of students who rejected the Draft Pilkada Law and asked that the democratic process run according to applicable regulations.

Dozens of students were arrested by officers during the forced disbandment on Monday night.

Several students were escorted by officers because they were suspected of participating in the action because they blocked the protocol road and the deadline for conveying their aspirations had been completed at 18.00 WITA.

Demonstrations of the Constitutional Court's decision and rejecting the Pilkada Bill also ended in chaos under the flyover, at the Andi Pangeran Pettarani intersection, Makassar on Monday, August 26, 2024.

One unit of a city transportation car is suspected of being burned by protesters after the authorities forcibly dispersed their actions.
