TANJUNG SELOR - Provincial Government (Pemprov) of North Kalimantan (Kaltara) through the Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (DKP) encourages small, micro and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and fishermen to increase downstream fishery products, namely shrimp and milkfish.
Head of the Kaltara DKP, Rukhi Syahudin, through the Complementation of the Fishery Products Market Institutional Plan, Anita Mayangsari said, Kaltara has enormous potential in downstreaming of fishery processed products.
"The potential is very large considering that so far the demand from buyers (buyers) in the form of raw materials is quite large, meaning the selling value of shrimp and milkfish is very high," he said, Wednesday, August 14.
Because so far Kaltara has always been in the form of raw materials sold to the market, so the price is not too high.
"With downstreaming, we process these products into semi-finished or finished materials, so they are ready to be marketed. So they have a fairly high selling value," he explained.
He explained that Kaltara is currently known as a milkfish barn in Indonesia because of its high production.
"So far, the selling value is quite high from Surabaya, East Java. It means that people in the area really like us because the quality is very good compared to the area closest to themselves," he said.
"The milkfish in Kaltara also has good quality compared to other regions. There are many and diverse processed fish in Kaltara, but based on market interest, buyers are more interested in certain products, especially milkfish and shrimp," he explained.
Apart from going to Surabaya, quite high demand also came from Tawau, Malaysia. This also includes other fishery products, such as shrimp.
Both, shrimp and milkfish processed products from Kaltara have met the quality of exports. So what the Provincial Government of Kaltara is currently trying to increase fishery processed products, namely by attracting investors.
"We can't manage it ourselves, we have to work with other people to increase the sale itself," he concluded.
