Polemic Of Online Education System In Indonesia

JAKARTA - Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) Nadiem Makarim gave a strong warning to all teachers to guide students during the teaching and learning process at home or the online system during the corona or COVID-19 outbreak.

Because, he got information, there are a number of teachers who give assignments to students without any guidance. The teaching and learning process like this makes students overwhelmed and difficult when doing the task.

"So please, even though our students are working from home, that the teacher also actually teaches from home and helps guide the students," said Nadiem, Tuesday, March 25.

Therefore, Nadiem asked all teachers to use certain methods or methods so that the teaching and learning process went well. Then, the use of the online system must be done as much as possible when the COVID-19 outbreak hits.

Using an online system with current conditions, is considered the best way to reduce contact and maintain the chain of spread of the virus.

"We also want to emphasize that although many schools now do learning from home, it does not mean that teachers only give work to students, but also interact and communicate to help students do their work," said Nadiem.

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary General of the Federation of Indonesian Teachers' Unions (FSGI) Satriawan Salim said there were at least three factors that caused the online teaching pattern not to be carried out by means of mentoring and only giving assignments.

First, because some teachers do not understand the current technology. So, they choose to use offline methods in the teaching and learning process.

"The teacher does not understand how to manage and use devices or media," said Satriawan.

Then, the second factor is because the rules made by the Principal of the School and the Education Office are too rigid, which hinders the teaching and learning process. Finally, about the economic problems of each student which are considered not all have a device.

"There are areas where parents and students do not have devices and laptops or computers," said Satriawan.

Meanwhile, education practitioner Indra Charismiadji said this problem was not new. This is because the application of the online learning system was tried before the COVID-19 outbreak. However, a number of teachers were not ready to apply it, so the method was largely abandoned.

In fact, reflecting on the unpreparedness of teachers with online systems, there is an assumption that they cannot educate or shape the younger generation to compete with other developed countries.

"Our teachers are not ready to bring our children to face the challenges of the 21st century," said Indra.

In addition, teachers' unpreparedness like this is also assessed because they do not follow the implementation of education process standards in accordance with Permendikbud Number 22 of 2016 concerning Basic and Secondary Education Process Standards.

With this recurring unpreparedness, he said, the Indonesian education system must evaluate teachers and provide penalties.

"Just look for another job because it is at stake for the future of the nation," said Indra.
