Former British Minister Of Home Affairs Candidates To Become Chairman Of The Conservative Party

MOSCOW - Former British Interior Minister Priti Patel on Saturday (27/7) announced his intention to run for chairman of Britain's Conservative Party.

"I stand up to become a new leader of the Conservative Party," Patel said in X.

The first representative from the Conservative Party to confirm his intention to run for party leader was former British Interior and Foreign Minister James Cleanly.

Then two former deputy interior ministers, Tom Tugendhat and Robert Jenrick, proposed their candidacy, followed by former state ministers for work and retirement, Mel Stride. According to the Times newspaper, the acceptance of applications from candidates for party leadership positions begins on Wednesday (24/7) and will end early next week.

Reporting from Sputnik, the list of the top eight candidates planning to run for leader also includes MPs Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, and Victoria Atkins.

In early September, the party would reduce the number of candidates to just four candidates through internal voting. The remaining candidates will be given the opportunity to speak at the convention and deliver a speech to members before the last two candidates are submitted to the vote in early October.

The winner of the party chairman convention will be announced on November 2.

Britain has held a general election on July 4. The Labor Party won 412 seats, meaning securing an absolute majority in parliament and overthrowing the Conservative Party that previously ruled.

The next day, the leader of the Keir Starmer Labor Party officially became the 58th British Prime Minister.

Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak, who previously left the post of prime minister, congratulated Starmer on his victory.

Sunak in his last speech as head of government announced he would step down as leader of the Conservative Party after formal arrangements for the selection of a replacement figure were made.
