JAKARTA - The Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) session which was held by the DPR RI for the second time will officially open today. The event was held by the DPR with the aim of strengthening relations between Indonesia and passive countries.

"The DPR is ready to host the IPPP forum for the second time. This meeting was held as an effort from the DPR to embrace friends of the Pacific region," said Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives' Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), Gilang Dhielafararez, Thursday, July 25.

Gilang assessed that Indonesia and Pacific countries, IPPP members, not only have geographical similarities but also have the same values, including the value of democracy, so that cooperation and continuity of relations are very important.

"This meeting also aims to build stronger connectivity between the DPR RI and the parliament of Pacific countries through various useful cooperation," he continued.

The 2nd IPPP session will be held at Fairmont Jakarta from July 24 to July 26, 2024. The opening ceremony as a sign of the 2nd IPPP Session will begin this morning, chaired by the Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the 2nd IPPP Session.

The Pacific parliamentary delegations who attended the 2nd IPPP Session were from the countries of the Cook Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Bribery, Kiribati, and the Republic of Fiji. Meanwhile, the state parliaments of Vanuatu, Nauru, Palau, French clothes, and New Caledonia have not been able to attend invitations.

With the theme 'Partnership for Prosperity: Fostering Regional Connectivity and Inclusive Development', the 2nd IPPP Session is expected to be a means to improve stability in the Pacific region. At the IPPP hearings, the Indonesian parliament and Pacific countries will discuss a number of global issues.

Some of the issues raised at the 2nd IPPP Session are related to how to tackle climate change, promote sustainable development, and support for the blue economy and sustainable tourism.

Then the parliament of passive countries will also discuss efforts to strengthen the role of women and youth as well as friendship to inter-cultural cooperation. This event will also hold a parliamentary dialogue event with countries with Melanesia clumps that are members of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) organization.

According to Gilang, one of the main focuses of the DPR in the 2nd IPPP Session is on the development and implementation of a green economy which is in line with Indonesia's commitment to achieving sustainable and inclusive development.

"In the 2nd IPPP Session, the DPR paid special attention to how the green economy can improve people's welfare, especially for those most vulnerable to the impact of climate change," explained Gilang.

This member of Commission III also said that the development of a green economy must be benefited by all people. For this reason, according to Gilang, the issue of a green economy needs to be raised at the 2nd IPPP Session considering that Indonesia and Pacific countries as fellow archipelagic countries have the same challenges in terms of climate change so that it requires efforts to develop a green economy.

"This forum is expected to provide a platform to share the best practices, formulate a joint strategy, and create collaborative initiatives that support environmental goals and development," he said.
