JAKARTA - Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna H Laoly revealed the reason the government had not submitted a revision to Law number 19 of 2016 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) to the DPR. The ITE Law review team is still listening to public input.

"The ITE Bill is being discussed and a public hearing is being held because it is related to the Criminal Bill (RKUHP) which has been discussed in depth. This is because we already have precedents," said Yasonna at the DPR, Tuesday, March 9.

According to him, the revision of the ITE Law could be proposed to be included in the list of the 2021 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas). Because Yasonna continued, the Prolegnas evaluation was carried out every six months so it was necessary to see further developments.

"Our policy is that the National Program is evaluated per semester, so look at further developments (plans to include the ITE Bill in Prolegnas 2021)," said Yasonna.

Previously, Deputy Speaker of the DPR, Azis Syamsuddin, encouraged the government to revise the Law on Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE). This is because the ITE Law is considered to be the cause of the upheaval in social media so far.

"The chaos of social media is because the ITE Law is widely used by the public to report to each other to the police and it has resulted in many people who are innocent victims being reported," Azis said in his statement, Tuesday, February 23.

Therefore, according to Azis, the government needs to immediately revise the ITE Law.

Meanwhile, the ITE Law Study Team had also held meetings with reported parties and reporters on the ITE Law. Various inputs were received, including the importance of educating digital space users.

The head of the ITE Law Study Team, Sugeng Purnomo, said that his party invited and asked for input from social media activists and practitioners.

"Hopefully, after these parties are asked for our information it will become clearer, actually the ITE law review team, especially the task of the sub-two, needs to be revised or not," he added.

It is known, in accordance with the decision of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Number 22 of 2021, which was issued in February, the ITE Law Study Team will work for two months. This team is planned to submit all reports on 22 May.
