JAKARTA - The Mayor of Solo, Gibran Rakabuming, welcomed the Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), HE Mr. Suhail Mohammed and his entourage before the groundbreaking of the Syeikh Zayed Mosque or the Great Mosque of Surakarta.

The mosque was built on an area of 2.9 hectares on the land of the former Pertamina depot, Jl. Ahmad Yani No. 191, Gilingan, Banjarsari, Surakarta City is a replica of the Syeikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

"The construction of the mosque is expected to be a memorial to the friendship between two great countries, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates," Gibran was quoted as saying by VOI on his Instagram page @gibran_rakabuming, Saturday, March 6.

The eldest son of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) directly welcomed the UAE representatives at Adi Sumarmo International Airport, Solo, Central Java. Walking hand in hand with Suhail Mohammed, Gibran looked handsome wearing a black suit.

Gibran said, the groundbreaking of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque was also attended by the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Minister of BUMN Erick Thohir as well as Deputy Governor of Central Java, Taj Yasin Maimoen.

"We, on behalf of the people of Solo, are honored by the visit from representatives of the UAE, especially this time on a mission to develop a center for Islamic education and religious tourism in the city of Surakarta. Hopefully this noble goal can bring blessings and benefits to others," said Gibran.

A 3D video of the Sheikh Zayed Solo Grand Mosque design project was also shown. The invited guests witnessed the magnificent design of the mosque.

"Of course it will be a special attraction, bring fresh air for the progress of Islam, especially in Solo and become the center of positive activities in society," explained Gibran.

For information, Sheikh Zayed Mosque can accommodate up to 10 thousand worshipers, different from the mosque in Abu Dhabi which can accommodate 40 thousand worshipers. However, there are still 3 main domes like the original mosque.

The mosque is designed slightly tilted and points towards the Qibla. Apart from being a place of worship, the mosque can also be used as religious tourism.
