European Parliament Adopts Law On Regulatory AI Artificial Intelligence

JAKARTA - The European Parliament (EP) adopted a law regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The AI law was adopted by the European Parliament with 523 votes in favor, 46 against, and 49 abstained, after negotiations with member states in December 2023.

The regulation " aims to protect basic rights, democracy, and the rule of law and environmental sustainability from the high risk of AI, while increasing innovation and making Europe a leader in its field," explained EP in a statement quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, March 13.

It also stipulates obligations for AI, based on possible risks, including restrictions on the use of biometric identification systems by law enforcement,'' as well as 'ban on social assessments and the use of AI to manipulate or exploit user vulnerabilities.

The AI system for general purposes (GPAI) is required to meet certain transparency criteria, and "image content, audio, or artificial or manipulated video ('deepfakes') needs to be labeled clearly," the statement said.

After receiving official support from the Council of the European Union, the law will take effect 20 days after it is published in the Official Journal, and is fully valid 24 months after it is implemented, except for some clauses, the statement added.
