Mount Semeru Eruption Again

LUMAJANG - Mount Semeru, which has a height of 3,676 meters above sea level (masl), has erupted again with the height of the eruption not being observed.

"The height of the eruption column was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 mm and a duration of 155 seconds," said Semeru Volcano Observation Post Officer Sigit Rian Alfian, quoted by ANTRA, Tuesday, February 13.

As of Tuesday night, the highest number of mountain eruptions recorded on the island of Java from January 1 to February 13, 2024 was 39 times and the status was still at level III or standby.

For seismic activity, 17 earthquakes were recorded with an amplitude of 10-22 mm, and an earthquake of 57-125 seconds. Then nine gusts with an amplitude of 4-8 mm, and a long earthquake of 47-55 seconds.

The Center for Volcanology for Mitigation and Geological Disasters (PVMBG) provides recommendations for the public not to carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 km from the summit (the center of the eruption).

Beyond this distance, the community does not carry out activities at a distance of 500 meters from the riverbank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan because it has the potential to be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 17 km from the summit.

The community is also not allowed to move within a 5 km radius of the crater/peak of Mount Semeru because it is prone to the danger of throwing stones (pijar).

The public is also advised to be aware of the potential for hot clouds, lava avalanches, and lahars along rivers/valleys that originate at the peak of the Semeru Volcano, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat as well as the potential for lahars in small rivers which are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
