Efforts To Solve Problems Of Violence In Papua

JAKARTA - The shooting incident of a TNI member, Serka Posthumous La Ongge by the Armed Civil Criminal Group (KKSB) adds to a series of cases that seem unending. Various factors have also been cited as the cause or reason for the chaos that occurred in Papua.

Thus, there was a negative response aimed at the government because it was deemed unable to resolve the chaos that had occurred several years ago.

Chairman of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) Asfinawati said, based on the data held, the chaos in Papua was mostly caused by human rights violations.

However, in an effort to resolve it, the government seems to have only issued discourses without any concrete steps being taken. Thus, Papuan community groups fought back.

"Because the Papuan people see that there is no will from Jakarta (the Government) to stop the violence that is happening," Asfinawati told VOI, Tuesday, March 10.

So, there are two ways that have been suggested to the government to resolve this chaos. First, approaching the human side by discussing the sharing of natural products.

In addition, they also respect the culture of the Papuan people, which is still their strong guide. Then, secondly, do not use a military approach by attracting TNI personnel who are in Papua.

So, with this withdrawal, the Papuan people will judge if the government has provided justice for them.

"So what the government has to do is provide justice and peace. There should not be a reduction in troops from the TNI and withdrawing from the TNI who are there," said Asfinawati.

A different statement was actually made by the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian. According to him, with this incident, the TNI and Polri must increase or strengthen security in Papua.

"I certainly ask the National Police Chief and the TNI Commander if necessary, the existing task force is added, strengthened again. The state must not be defeated by groups that have violated the law, especially with weapons," said Tito.

In addition, controlling the situation can also use a soft approach by embracing respected community leaders in Papua to dialogue with the KKB so as not to commit acts of violence.

However, if that method does not work, then, the last way to be done is to take firm action to stop the chaos that is still happening.

"The soft approach is implemented, but if the soft approach cannot be implemented and they violate the law, let alone someone who dies of all kinds, we must act decisively. Be firm. We must uphold the law. Whoever he is, be firm," said Tito.
