JAKARTA - The Chinese government responded positively to the termination of Nauru diplomatic relations with Taiwan and chose to apply the principle of "One China".
"As an independent sovereign nation, the Republic of Nauru announced that it recognizes the principle of 'One China', deciding what is called 'plomatic relations' with Taiwanese authorities and trying to rebuild diplomatic relations with China, we appreciate and welcome the Nauru Government's decision," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning when delivering a statement to the media in Beijing, China., reported by ANTARA, Monday, January 15.
Nauru, a country in the southern Pacific, has reportedly cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan by stating that it will no longer recognize Taiwan as a "separated country", but "as an inseparable part of China's territory". The Nauru government also said it would no longer develop official relations with Taiwan.
"There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China," said Mao Ning.

"As a sovereign country, the Republic of Nauru independently makes the right choice by announcing the recognition of the principle of 'One China' and trying to rebuild diplomatic relations with China. This fully shows that the principle of 'One China' is the foundation of a trend of global opinion and history," said Mao Ning.
Nauru's statement to recognize the principle of "One China" was carried out after the Taiwan election on Saturday (13/1) which was won by William Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which was described as a defender of Taiwan democracy.

William Lai Ching-te received more than 5.58 million votes from about 14 million ballots, Hou Yu-ih, bagging 4.66 million votes and Ko Wen-je from the Taiwanese People's Party (TPP) received 3.68 million votes.
Currently Lai is still the deputy leader of Tsai Ing-wen and this will be the third DPP term in a row.
