European Union Urges New Jeda In Israeli Attacks On Gaza

JAKARTA - EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Friday urged a "new jeda" in Gaza, saying the Israeli attack on the trapped route continued to cause heavy casualties.

"Israel's ground attack in central Gaza continues to cause heavy casualties even though the IDF (Israeli army) is obliged to protect civilians the bombings in Maghazi refugee camps are among the deadliest and there are now reported additional 150,000 refugees", said Josep Borrell in X as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Saturday, December 30.

"The new body in hostilities is very urgent," he said.

The war humanitarian break in Gaza was first carried out on November 24, 2023. The week-long break was used for exchange of prisoners between Palestinian groups Hamas and Israel, as well as sending aid to the enclave.

The pause failed to be extended due to no agreement reached between Hamas and Israel.

Since the cross-border attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel has continued its relentless attack on the Gaza Strip, killing at least 21,507 Palestinians and injuring 55,915 people, according to local health authorities.

On November 10, a spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry revised the death toll of the Hamas attack on October 7, with the death toll reaching 1,200. Since then, Israel has not provided any additional information regarding victims of the Hamas attack.

Israel's blind attacks in the Gaza Strip also caused destruction, with 60 percent of the infrastructure in the region damaged or destroyed, and nearly 2 million residents displaced amid the food, clean water, and drug crisis.
