Lapan Warns Of Potential Floods In Jakarta February 19-20 Due To Extreme Rain

JAKARTA - The National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (Lapan) warned to be aware of the potential for large floods due to extreme rains in Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jadetabek).

Atmospheric science researcher at the Lapan Dr. Lapan Center for Atmospheric Science and Technology Erma Yulihastin said that all parties were asked to increase awareness of the potential for major floods. The potential for flooding can occur on February 19-20 as widely in Jadetabek as it happened on January 1, 2020.

The prediction results of Lapan's Satellite-based Disaster Early Warning System (Sadewa) show that extreme rain began to occur in the Jakarta area from 23.00 WIB with increasing intensity and an area coverage that extends and extends to include Bekasi, Depok, Tangerang, and even to Karawang.

In accordance with the early warning issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), extreme rain will take place on February 18-19, 2021 in Jakarta.

Erma said extreme rain is predicted to reach its maximum intensity at 05.00 WIB. After that, the intensity will decrease with time but the rain on a meso scale or area will persist throughout the day until 17.00 WIB in the Jakarta area and its surroundings.

In the afternoon, rain will also form in the Bogor area and its surroundings and spread north to Jakarta with an increase in the intensity of rain which will occur again before midnight at 23.00 WIB.

Rain in Jakarta will even occur until 04.00 WIB on February 20, 2021.

The extreme rain in the early morning was very closely affected by the strengthening (Cross Equatorial Northerky Surge (CENS) and the wind in the Java Sea which was very humid.
