Thousands Of Tons Of Dead Fish On North Japan Beach

TOKYO - Thousands of tons of dead sardines and registers were stranded on the north Japanese coast covering a 1.5-kilometer coastline around Toi's fishery port in southern Hakodate, Hokkaido Island.

The local government said Friday it was investigating the cause of the fish's mass death and was looking for a solution to move the fish, according to a report by The Japan News newspaper quoted by Antara and VOI, Sunday, December 10.

According to local officials, his party has found thousands of tons of dead fish on most beaches and appealed to the public not to eat fish.

Officials estimate that at least 1,000 tonnes of fish, mostly sardines and some makell fish were stranded on the beach on December 7.

However, he said, this number may increase.

Starting Saturday, city government officials will coordinate with local fishermen and Oshima Regional Promotion Bureau in Hokkaido Prefecture to clean up the area and dispose of the carcass.
