KPU Asked To Clarify The Format For The 2024 Presidential Election Debate, PKS Legislator: Don't Be Stupid To The Public To Protect One Of The Paslons

Member of Commission II of the House of Representatives, Mardani Ali Sera, asked the General Elections Commission (KPU) to clarify the debate between the presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2024 presidential election.

This was conveyed by Mardani in response to the KPU's decision to change the debate format of the presidential and vice presidential candidates. Different from the 2019 presidential election, this time there will be no special debate for vice presidential candidates (cawapres) separately because the pair will come together.

"This needs to be clarified," Mardani told VOI when contacted via text message, Saturday, December 2.

The KPU does have the authority to regulate the format of the debate. However, explanations must still be given to the public to prevent public perceptions.

"The public should not be fooled by the rules that seem to protect one of the pairs of candidates," he said.

"(The debate format, ed) must be explained," continued the member of the DPR's Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction.

As previously reported, the implementation of the presidential and vice presidential debates is regulated in KPU Regulation (PKPU) Number 15 of 2023 concerning the 2024 Election Campaign. The first debate will be held on Tuesday, December 12 with the theme related to law, human rights (HAM), government, eradication of corruption, and strengthening democracy.

The fulfillment of the debate format for presidential and vice presidential candidates is carried out so that voters can see the cooperation of the candidate pair.

"So that the public will be more confident in the teamwork between the presidential and vice presidential candidates in their appearance in the debate," said KPU chairman Hasyim Asy'ari when confirmed, Friday, December 1.
