Mahfud MD: If The ITE Law Is Deemed To Contain Rubber Articles, Let's Make A New Resultant By Revising The Law

JAKARTA - Many parties are concerned about the rubber article in the ITE Law, prompting the government to hold discussions regarding the revision of the law.

This was conveyed by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD through his Twitter account @mohmahfudmd.

"The government will discuss initiatives to revise the ITE Law," wrote the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) as quoted by VOI, Tuesday, February 16.

"If now the law is deemed bad and contains rubber articles, let's make a new resultant by revising the law. How good is it, this is democracy," he said.

As previously reported, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) also touched on the revision of the ITE Law during the TNI-Polri Meeting at the State Palace, Jakarta. To the National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, he asked the police to be careful in handling reports related to the law.

In addition, he said, if the ITE Law is deemed not to provide a sense of justice, the government will propose a revision of the law which is often seen as restricting freedom of opinion.

"If the ITE Law cannot provide a sense of justice, yes, I will ask the DPR to jointly revise this Law. This ITE Law. Because here is the upstream. The upstream is here ... the revision," said Jokowi in a statement via YouTube Secretariat. President, Monday, February 15th.

"Especially removing rubber articles whose interpretation can be different. Those that are easy to interpret unilaterally," he added.

However, Jokowi emphasized that all parties must protect Indonesia's digital space.
