JAKARTA - A survey conducted by a temporary video platform, Snapchat, shows that Generation Z understands and protects privacy more than other generations, including millennials.

"Digital technology has shaped Gen Z and we should be able to learn a few things from Gen Z in terms of behavior and habits," said Director of Market Development for Snap Southeast Asia, Anubhav Nayyar, in a press release, quoted on Saturday, February 13.

The millennial generation in question is people who are currently 24 to 40 years old, while generation Z is 24 years old and below.

According to Nayyar, most of the millennial generation are digital immigrants, that is, they experienced a period before the mass adoption of digital technology.

While Generation Z is a digital by nature, they were born when technology developed rapidly, the internet was integrated into everyday life.

"They do not experience a world without smartphones and the internet. Therefore, the way they think, communicate and use the Gen Z internet is different from the previous generation," said Nayyar.

He quoted the 2019 Friendship Report from Snap, that millennials are the generation who share their happiness the most, including those for mental health, romance and financial matters.

"Millennials are the generation that says the least 'I won't share about it'," said Nayyar.

Generation Z response contrasts with millennials when it comes to sharing happiness, they tend to protect their privacy more.

When using social media, Generation Z chooses how they share and on which platforms they share that joy, including through temporary videos.

According to the survey, Generation Z prefers to share private things through private messages rather than directly uploading them on social media.

"Gen Z implicitly understands that just because they can share information with the rest of the world, doesn't mean they have to share everything," said Nayyar.

The way to socialize generation Z on social media is different from millennials. If millennials like to network widely and make friends with everyone on social media, Generation Z has a smaller circle of friends.
