JAKARTA - The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) stated that a roar could be heard again from Mount Raung in East Java during the observation period Wednesday at 00.00-06.00 WIB.

The head of the PVMBG West Region Volcano Mitigation Sub-Division, Nia Haerani, when contacted from Jember, said that the roar came from the vibrational wave activity generated when magma (incandescent molten rock and gas) came out of the crater hole of the volcano to the surface.

According to her, this is a common phenomenon in volcanoes.

He also said that during the observation period Wednesday between 00.00-06.00 WIB, the lights of the fire were visible on Mount Raung.

"For seismic activity, on Wednesday at 00.00-06.00 WIB, continuous tremors with an amplitude of 5-32 mm were recorded", she said.

Regarding residents' reports about loud banging that was heard in the Kalipuro area in Banyuwangi, about 20 kilometers from the top of Mount Raung, Nia could not confirm whether the explosion came from Mount Raung.

Mount Raung, which is located on the border of Jember, Banyuwangi and Bondowoso Regencies in East Java, is still showing an increase in volcanic activity.

On January 20, 2021, the volcano's status is set to be at level II or alert. PVMBG appealed to the public not to have activities within a two-kilometer radius of the eruption of the crater at the peak of Mount Raung.
