The panel of judges at the Tanjungkarang District Court sentenced Wawan Kurniawan to three months in prison, the defendant in the case of disbandment of worship at the Bandar Lampung Camp Daud Christian Church (GKKD).

"Sentenced him to three months in prison," said Chief Justice Samsumar Hidayat when reading the verdict on the disbandment of worship at the Tanjungkarang District Court as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, August 15.

In this case, the judge stated that the defendant Wawan Kurniawan had been proven guilty of committing an act that violated Article 335 Paragraph (1) of the 1st Criminal Code.

The panel of judges in their consideration said that the defendant's actions had exceeded his authority as chairman of the neighborhood unit (RT) and that this act had the potential to cause chaos in the local environment.

"The thing that relieves the defendant is that there has been mediation between the defendants and the congregation," said Samsumar.

On this decision, the prosecutor and the defendant through their legal advisor expressed their thoughts and would state their position in the next seven days.

The sentence handed down by the Tanjungkarang District Court judges was one month lighter than the demands of Public Prosecutor Samsi Talib, who charged the defendant with a sentence of four months in prison.

The defendant Wawan Kurniawan, who is the head of RT 12 in Rajabasa Jaya, Rajabasa District, Bandarlampung City, was sued by Article 167 of the Criminal Code.

The case of the disbandment of Christian worship took place on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at 09.30 WIB at the Camp Daud Christian Church, Jalan Soekarno-Hatta Gang Anggrek, RT 12, Rajabasa Jaya Village, Rajabasa District, Bandar Lampung. The case became public attention after going viral on social media.
