Republican Leader Mitch McConnell Supports US President Joe Biden

JAKARTA - Amid the frenzy of internal domestic politics of the United States (US), after the Capitol Hill riots and ahead of Donald Trump's impeachment trial on February 9.

There is support from the Republican Party for President of the United States (US) Joe Biden. Unmitigated, support was provided by US Senate Minority Leader from the Republican Party, Mitch McConnell.

Support was provided by McConnell in response to criticism of the Myanmar military coup against Myanmar Leader Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. McConnell also supports the Joe Biden Administration in taking tough action against the Myanmar military.

"The Joe Biden administration must take a firm stance. All our partners, as well as all democracies around the world, must follow suit in condemning authoritarian attacks on democracy," McConnell said.

"The arrests are gruesome and require decisive action and attitude," said McConnell, who has good relations with Suu Kyi. In fact, he also defended when Suu Kyi was criticized regarding Rohingya refugees.

McConnell also wants Washington to "charge fees" to those behind Myanmar's military coup on February 1.

The President of the United States (US) Joe Biden on Monday threatened to reimpose sanctions against Myanmar following a coup carried out by the country's military leaders.

Biden condemned the military's takeover of civilian rule, followed by the detention of elected leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. According to him, this is a direct attack on the transition to a democracy and rule of law.

“The United States is lifting sanctions against Burma over the past decade based on progress towards democracy. The reversal of progress will require an immediate review of our laws and sanctions authorities, followed by appropriate action, "he stressed.
