JAKARTA - Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Hospitals in East Nusa Tenggara (Persi NTT), Dr. Yudith Marietha Kota, spoke up following accusations of deliberately declaring the body of a patient positive for COVID-19.

According to him, all procedures when the patient is admitted to the hospital, treated to death have been carried out as well as possible.

Yudith explained that patients suffering from comorbid diseases such as diabetes, heart problems, hypertension, and others come to the hospital for regular treatment and health control.

However, when it comes to the emergency room (UGD), screening is mandatory according to the requirements.

From the results of the screening, if there are other complaints such as fever, cough, then an anamesa examination, supporting examinations, and antigen swabs can be diagnosed as probable COVID-19.

"So if the patient dies, we must declare that he died of COVID-19, either suspect COVID-19 or probable COVID-19," he said.

Furthermore, the patient who dies must be carried out a funeral according to the funeral protocol for the COVID-19 patient.

Yudith added that COVID-19 patients must be buried according to protocol because based on the research results show that the virus is still in the body of the deceased for several hours.

The virus is still released along with body fluids from the body through the nose, mouth, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and persists for some time in the fluid.

"That is why the bodies must be wrapped in layers and then put in a crate and cannot be reopened. So there is no accidental COVID-19 but this funeral procedure is to prevent transmission," he said.
