JAKARTA - Mexico's Ministry of Health reported 18,670 new cases of infection and 1,506 additional deaths due to COVID-19. The total now Mexico has a total of 1,825,519 cases and 155,145 deaths.

This figure makes Mexico surpass India's COVID-19 deaths and makes them the country with the third highest death toll in the world.

Mexico on Thursday surpassed India in confirmed COVID-19 deaths, giving the Latin American country the third-highest toll worldwide, according to a tally of official Reuters data.

The total COVID-19 death toll in India currently stands at 153,847. The current population of Mexico is 126 million and India is 10 times the population of Mexico.

According to Johns Hopkins University data, when adjusted for deaths per head of population, the number of victims in Mexico is lower than in several other countries, including the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Italy, the United States, Peru, and Spain.

Mexico's swelling death toll underscores its struggle to contain the pandemic, which is getting worse despite government restrictions on movement and trade.

In Mexico City, hospitals are nearing capacity and a shortage of oxygen tanks has made patient care difficult.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who announced on Sunday that he was positive for OCIVD-19 on Sunday, January 24, is now feeling better.

"His condition is improving and in good spirits. The president is practically asymptomatic and also very active," said Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell.
