YOGYAKARTA - Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School is in public discussion because it is suspected that there is a deviant sect and criminal acts in it. The Islamic Boarding School, which is led by Panji Gumilang, is located in Mekarjaya Village, Gantar, Indramayu, West Java. The emergence of irregularities in religious teachings and criminal acts at the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) formed a study team to investigate the case. The West Java Provincial Government (Pemprov) is also working with the National Police to form an investigation team to investigate allegations of criminal acts at the boarding school.

The third President of Indonesia, BJ Habibie, was recorded as having made a visit to the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School. The arrival of BJ Habibie at that time was in order to inaugurate the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School on August 27, 1999.

BJ Habibie, who was then president, came directly to Indramayu to give a speech at the inauguration of the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School. This national figure reminded the issue of fading the nation's moral and ethical foundation in applying science.

AM Hendropriyono, former Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), is also said to have visited the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School. Hendropriyono made a visit on May 13, 2003. He was present to represent President Megawati Soekarnoputri for the groundbreaking ceremony for the first benchmark of the learning building Dr. Ir. H. Ahmad Soekarno in the boarding school area.

In the introduction to the book Al Zaytun, Source of Inspiration, AM Hendropriyono expressed his impression on the curriculum imposed at the boarding school. The Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School is said to teach inclusive, open, and foster tolerance and peace.

AM Hendropriyono also wrote about his distrust that Al-Zaytun was accused of supporting the Islamic State of Indonesia (NII).

Moeldoko, the Presidential Chief of Staff (KSP), has visited the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School twice. Moeldoko's visit was carried out in the context of a lecture on nationality. The first time Moeldoko visited this boarding school was when he was the Commander of the Siliwangi Military Command. The two of them arrived when they had served as KSP.

While at the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School delivering a lecture, Moeldoko said he did not see any suspicious activity. Furthermore, Moeldoko also denied the suspicion that he was being backing up the boarding school led by Panji Gumilang.

"If the problem (instigating) needs to be deepened. It has to be carried out there, see what his daily life looks like. If it's just a glimpse, I don't understand. What is real, it is necessary to have an intense body to see it so that later the conclusion is not wrong," said Moeldoko.

Suryadharma Ali, former Minister of Religion under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), also visited the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School on May 11, 2011. Suryadharma Ali's arrival at that time was carried out at a time when the polemic was allegedly affiliated with the NII movement.

However, Suryadharma Ali dismissed allegations of tilting against Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School. He said that the curriculum taught at the boarding school did not deviate from Islamic teachings.

Anas Urbaningrum also visited the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School when he served as Chairman of the Democratic Party for the 2010-2013 period. Anas made a visit in the context of friendship. He expressed his admiration for the Al-Zaytun pesantren.
