JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has asked residents to remain alert to the potential for earthquakes in the Southeast Sulawesi region (Sultra).

Head of BMKG Kendari Geophysics Station, Rudin said, it is possible for an earthquake in the Southeast Sulawesi region to occur, but based on his monitoring, an earthquake has the potential to occur on a small scale.

"The potential for earthquakes is still there, but hopefully it's not big, because as far as we know, the more frequent earthquakes, the smaller the magnitude," said Rudin as quoted by Antara, Saturday, January 23.

He conveyed that the potential for earthquakes in Southeast Sulawesi was small in scale because the area was in a horizontal fault segment so that it could only create earthquakes of small strength.

"Southeast Sulawesi is in a horizontal fault segment, while in West Sulawesi it is in a large fault segment, where the shift in the fault occurs an accumulation of large earthquake frequencies so that quite a lot of them come out," he explained.

However, he appealed to the public to remain vigilant with the current conditions, considering that natural phenomena cannot be predicted with certainty because they can change at any time.

In order to detect the movement of the earth fault early, BMKG Kendari Geophysics Station has installed nine earthquake early detection devices in a number of areas in Southeast Sulawesi, including in Kolaka Regency, there are two tools, then North Kolaka, Konawe, North Konawe, Wakatobi and Baubau City respectively. an earthquake early detection tool.
