In his farewell speech, Trump, apart from welcoming the new administration, also touched on the Twitter platform that had suspended his account. "Closing free and open debate violates our core values and most enduring traditions."

"America is not a timid, timid nation that needs to be protected and protected from people we disagree with," Trump explained.

Previously, President Trump's Twitter account was permanently suspended by Twitter because it was deemed to have violated platform policies. A permanent suspension comes after the Capitol riots on January 6.

"A social media platform can make a policy about who is allowed on that platform, what type of content is allowed on that platform," explained Fiesler.

"The First Amendment protects you from a government that doesn't let you speak. So Twitter is not a government. But Trump is a government," said Fiesler.

Fiesler also explained his opinion on how much influence social media platforms can have in the US.

"I think there will be an impact from this (account blocking on social media). Not only around social media policies, but the amount of power these companies have. Some monopoly-related deals may have been triggered from that case," he said.

According to Fiesler, the case of blocking Trump's account and several other politicians will cause a lot of talk about policy on social media.
