Jokowi Allows Naming Mountains To Islands Using Foreign Languages

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo issued Government Regulation (PP) Number 2 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Topographical Names. One of the regulations in the PP, Jokowi allows the use of topographical names in foreign languages.

It is known, topographical features have two elements, namely natural and artificial elements. Natural elements include islands, islands, mountains, mountains, hills, highlands, caves, valleys, headlands, peninsulas, lakes, rivers, estuaries, oceans, seas, straits, bays, underwater elements, and so on.

Then, artificial elements consist of government administrative areas, built objects, special areas, inhabited places, and entities that have special value for society.

In Article 3 letter (a) of Government Regulation Number 2 of 2021, topographical names are prioritized to use Indonesian. However, Article 3 letter (b) states topographical names can also use regional languages or foreign languages if topographical elements have historical, cultural, customary, and / or religious values.

Furthermore, topographical names may use the roman alphabet; use one name for an element; respect the existence of ethnicity, religion, race and class; use three words at most.

Then, avoid using the name of a person who is still alive and can use the name of a person who has passed away for at least five years from the time the person concerned died.

Then, topographical names avoid the use of agency names, avoid using names that conflict with national and / or regional interests; and comply with the rules for writing topographical names and spatial rules.

Then in Article 6, it is stated that the administration of topographical names is coordinated by the Agency. In coordinating the implementation of topographical names, the Agency involves ministries / agencies, provincial governments, district / city governments, and other related parties.
