BPBD: 27 People Died Due To The Earthquake In West Sulawesi

Building collapses due to earthquake shocks in West Sulawesi (ANTARA)

MAKASSAR - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 in Majene, West Sulawesi, killed 27 people in Majene and Mamuju.

"The data we receive from the Mamuju and Majene BPBDs that we are releasing now is that 18 people died in Mamuju and nine in Majene," said Head of West Sulawesi (Sulbar) Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Darno Majid, quoted by Antara, Friday, January 15th.

The data he released was based on the latest data up to 14.00 WITA. BPBD continues to monitor the situation and progress of both the evacuation and data collection of victims of the ruins.

Darno also appealed to people in these cities and districts to find safe places for refuge and not to run to mountains that have the potential to landslides.

"Look for a shelter that is truly safe and don't go to mountains that are prone to landslides. We have also prepared a stadium for temporary evacuation," he said.

Previously, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred in the West Sulawesi region on Friday morning at 02.28 WITA in the morning. This earthquake knocked down many buildings.

The earthquake in Mamuju was centered six kilometers northeast of Majene Regency 2.98 LS-118.94 East Longitude at a depth of 10 kilometers, also damaged the Mamuju hospital building.

A number of buildings in Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi Province collapsed due to an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 which rocked the area on Friday morning at around 02.00 WITA.

Reportedly from Mamuju, a number of buildings, such as Maleo Town Square, shops, supermarkets, and the Mitra Manakarra Hospital collapsed due to the shaking of the earthquake. Including, the building for government facilities, namely the front of the governor's office of West Sulawesi.

Two security officers were reportedly buried in the rubble at the front of the West Sulawesi governor's office.
