JAKARTA - The Ukrainian military caused "very significant losses" to Russian troops in heavy fighting near the city of Vuhledar in the eastern Donbas region, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday.

"The situation is very complicated. And we are at war. We destroyed the invaders and caused very significant losses in Russia," President Zelensky said in his evening video speech.

President Zelensky referred to several cities in Donbas, where fighting had focused for months, saying "the more losses Russia suffered there, in Donbas, in Bakhmut, Vuhledar, Marinka, Kreminna, the sooner we can end this war with Ukraine's victory."

President Zelensky further outlined the circumstances of defense in other sectors, after what he described as a meeting of the military command's "expansion".

Everything is under control near the port of the Odesa Black Sea, he said, with troops "protecting" the central region of Zaporizhia, which is partly controlled by Russian forces.

There is a "very good result" on the northern border with Russia and its Belarusian allies, the area where Ukrainian forces recaptured cities from Russian troops in September and October.

"Of course, military issues and intelligence detail are not something you can share with everyone," President Zelensky said.

"But I want our people to have predictability now. And the feeling that Ukraine is moving towards its goals," he concluded.
