JAKARTA - The people of Belitung, Bangka Belitung Islands, are asked to live a healthier life. One way is to stop defecating carelessly.

"We ask residents to stop defecating carelessly in order to maintain environmental health," said Belitung Deputy Regent Isyak Meirobie in Tanjung Pandan, Saturday, February 18, as reported by Antara.

According to him, Belitung is an area where the sanitation of defecating carelessly is still quite high. The reason is that public awareness in the change in good sanitation is not evenly distributed.

"It seems that there are still many residents who are capable, but are reluctant to build toilets," he said.

What is there, most residents prioritize building houses without making toilets first.

"This is a big homework for the government in accelerating the target of achieving universal access to healthy latrines," he said.

The Deputy Regent explained that this is important to do considering that Belitung is a tourist area that brings in tourists from abroad.

"Actually, talking about defecating carelessly now is no longer the time," he said.

He said, by 2023 local governments are targeting to reduce the number of people who are still defecating carelessly.

"The highest number is open defecation, namely in Lassar Village as many as 133 families and the lowest target is Batu Itam Village with one family head," he said.

He instructed the Belitung Health Service to check the number of heads of families (KK) who were still defecating carelessly. The Deputy Regent also asked the local health office to re-check the number of residents who had not made latrines.

"Later, the family will be seen whether it is categorized as capable or unable," he said.
