GARUT - The Government of Garut Regency, West Java has distributed a number of basic needs for the victims of the earthquake in the activities of Sesar Garsela in Pasirwangi and Samarang sub-districts, including repairing damaged houses. The food needs distributed are considered sufficient to meet the needs of one day or the day after the 4.3 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday (1/2) night. If the community needs food staple assistance, he said, the local government is ready to distribute it back, because the food stock for victims of natural disasters is available quite a lot in local governments. He said the initial stages of disaster management were conducting an assessment of each house that was reported to be damaged in Samarang and Pasirwangi sub-districts. Local governments, he said, would then classify the level of damage to houses in the category of minor, moderate, or severe damage, before later being given repair assistance from the government. "Everything is recorded, but from the results of the data it will be accessed and classified, which ones are heavily damaged, moderately damaged, and lightly damaged, please take time," he said. The Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Garut Regency, Satria Budi, added that his staff had been deployed to help people affected by the earthquake, and also to record damaged houses. "We are conducting an assessment assisted by the TNI, Polri and elements of the local government with PUPR, and all those involved jointly carry out assessments at the disaster site," he said. He revealed that the number of damage to residents' houses due to the earthquake is still changing or increasing, which initially reported 20 housing units at night, is currently increasing because it is still being checked in the field. The assessment officer in the field, he said, examined every damaged resident's house because it was caused by earthquake shocks, or had previously been damaged which were not caused by an earthquake. "Today, there are indeed many reports, but today we are assessing which ones are really due to disasters and which ones are not, we classify which ones are light, which ones are heavy, we coordinate with Perkim (Housing and Settlement Service)," said Satria. He added that currently the Garut BPBD together with the National Police, the TNI, and other agencies are cleaning damaged housing materials. The effort, he said, was so that residents could return to their homes, while those whose houses were dangerous to live in were temporarily taking refuge in the homes of their closest relatives. "People live in places, some are at their relatives' houses, only a few families, yes, today they can enter again," he said.
