RAJA AMPAT - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) released the subsidiary of a belimbing shark (Stegostoma tigrinum) in the conservation area of the West side Waigeo archipelago, Raja Ampat, West Papua. Head of the Kupang National Water Conservation Area (BKKPN), Imam Fauzi, explained that the release of two belombing sharks that were started with traditional ceremonies was carried out in the Wayag Lagoon at different locations. The first release of a young belombing shark named Charlie was carried out on a white sand beach in the lagoon, while the cub named Audrey was carried out on a sandy beach on the entrance to the lagoon. "Laguna Wayag Raja Ampat was chosen as the first release site because it is the ecosystem of various types of sharks and paries, especially as the first Pari Manta Karang enlargement area in the world," he explained in a written statement received in Jakarta, Antara, Friday, January 27. In addition, Laguna Wayag is part of the Waigeo Islands Conservation Area next to the West under the management of the Kupang BKKPN so that it can offer protection for belimbing sharks whose conservation status is currently categorized as endangered in The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). To note, the project to increase and restore the population of belombing sharks or StAR (Stegostoma tigrinum Augmentation and Recovery) Project is under the coordination of the Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) of West Papua Province, which is supported by the Kupang National Water Conservation Area Center (BKKPN) and the Sorong Coastal and Marine Resources Management Loka (LPSPL), as the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of the Directorate General of Marine Space Management (Ditjen PRL).
